Swamp Fox Players: Simply Sondheim
Jul 16 @ 8:00 pm
Swamp Fox Players: Simply Sondheim @ The Strand Theatre | Georgetown | South Carolina | United States

Directors’ Notes: January 1982 was a pivotal moment for me when it comes to musical theatre. I started rehearsal for a show called Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at DePauw University by a composer I had never really heard of, Stephen Sondheim. It was one of the first non-professional productions ever and starred future Tony Award winner for Best Actress in a Musical, Alice Ripley. (She won for Next To Normal). Since then I have had the opportunity to play the Judge in Sweeney Todd and the Wolf in Into The Woods. Sondheim is simply a musical genius in my estimation. He is considered by most to be the greatest lyricist ever and he is truly the greatest and best known contemporary composer of American musical theatre. He is the recipient of an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards(more than any other composer, including a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre), eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, the Laurence Olivier Award (London’s “Tony Awards”), and a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom. I have been fortunate enough to see Sweeney Todd, Into The Woods, Follies, A Little Night Music, and Sunday in the Park With George on the Broadway stage. We invite you to join this amazingly talented cast and crew as we take a journey through a mere snippet of this prolific lyricist/composer’s hundreds of songs. Please enjoy Simply Sondheim. Gary Life, Director

Swamp Fox Players: Simply Sondheim
Jul 24 @ 2:30 pm

Jul 30 @ 8:00 pm
