NATIONAL BUY A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT DAY
Each year on May 22 we observe National Buy a Musical Instrument Day. The day is all about playing music. If you are a musician, it might be time for a new instrument. Maybe you can learn to play a second or third one. If you have never played an instrument before, National Buy A Musical Instrument Day might be the motivation you need to start.
National Buy a Musical Instrument Day is not just for school aged children, this observation is for people of all ages. One is never too old to learn something new. You may have always wanted to play the piano or the guitar. It is possible that playing a musical instrument is on one’s “bucket list“
HOW TO OBSERVE
If you are young or old, musically experienced or just beginning, May 22nd is the day to go instrument shopping. Use #BuyAMusicalInstrumentDay to post on social media.
HISTORY
Within our research, we were unable to find the creator and the origin of National Buy a Musical Instrument Day, an “unofficial” National holiday.
We have recently been informed that this day was originally observed on May 18th, the birth date of Meredith Willson. Willson was an American composer, songwriter, flutist, conductor and playwright, best known for writing the book, music and lyrics for the hit Broadway musical The Music Man. We will investigate this claim and if correct, will make the change needed.
Art Works hosts this fundraiser at the Litchfield Exchange to help Laura Herriott re-roof her bed & breakfast on Sandy Island. Local artists, photographers, artisans & authors will fill the atrium (vendor table, $25), while the Pawleys Island Jazz Quartet graces the airspace, free refreshments & beverages. Goodwill donation at the door. Art Works will feature new works by local artists (Terry Belanger, Kathi Bixler, Nancy Bracken, Roger Cleveland, Gwen Coley, Millie Doud, Sharon Knost, Barbara Linderman, Mary Helen Lowrimore, Suz Mole, Sue Schirtzinger, Barnie Slice, Squeaky Swenson, Cindy Valentine and Kathy Welde).
About 25 of our fun and talented artists will set up outdoor booths chock full of fabulous Christmas and Holiday gifts. You’ll find everything from beautiful artisan-crafted jewelry; paintings in oil, watercolor, mixed media and acrylic. Surfboards! And more! The pottery alone is enough for an entire show! Holiday refreshments will abound! Rain or shine! More info posted on our blog!
