The Fantasticks: Review by Lauren Hyatt

Review of “Geriatric Monologues” by Lauren Hyatt

Celebrating Life?

By: Lauren Hyatt

Getting older is inevitable; but it doesn’t mean that you just have to wait around for the end. Play some of your favorite music and dance, go outside and enjoy the day, talk to your neighbors; the list is endless. The aging journey is a wonderful, and sometimes achy, process. You are now the elder. The one that gives advice. The one that people complain about driving too slow in the left hand lane. In the “Geriatric Monologues”, Jim Rogers beautifully shows every side of growing old. That yes, it sucks. And yes you don’t know what’s going to happen. And yes it is a little scary. But you got to keep moving.

In the 7 parts of this play, Jim Rogers discusses events or things that elderly people may have in common. As the 7 characters sit in their rocking chairs discussing their lives, reminiscing, thinking about how life could have been better and still can be better. Each character has a different journey. Each one sees the world differently, but when talking together, it makes sense. With a “DoMore”, “Find”, “Fini”, “Content”, “Lament”, “Memory”, and “Rant”, the audience can relate to either all or just one character.

This is the world premiere of “Geriatric Monologues” by Jim Rogers. This is also, sadly, the final production at the Murrells Inlet Community Theatre. After 18 years together, and over 44 productions, MICT is coming to an end. As I listened to some of the monologues last night, it was only fitting that this was MICT’s final show. This show is a representation of life wrapped into one big bow. So please, support local theatre, especially this one as it is their last show. “Geriatric Monologues” is showing at the Murrells Inlet Community Theatre June 17-18 & 24-25 at 7:30pm and June 19 & 26 at 2pm.
