Audition Information For our 2017-2018 Musical and TOR Actors Playhouse Season
All Auditions are at 7:00 pm
Please allow yourself ample time to fill out paperwork.
No monologues are needed for our productions.
Everyone will do a cold reading from the show they are auditioning for.
You must prepare 16 bars of a song that shows your strengths.
Please bring a backing track. NO ACAPELLA!
You will also do a group dance if you are auditioning for our musicals that will be pitched at all capabilites.
Hand to God Auditions……January 21st & 22nd
In the tiny, conservative town of Cypress, Texas, the shy, mild-mannered Jason is just trying to be a good son. When he joins his mother Margery’s Christian Puppet Ministry at the local church, Jason discovers a burgeoning talent for puppetry, and it seems like things after his father’s sudden death might just turn out okay. Tyrone the puppet, though, has other plans. As the foul-mouthed, independent, and devilishly funny Tyrone grows in strength, Jason’s complex relationships with the school bully, the girl-next-door, and most importantly, his mother, are thrown into upheaval. An irreverent, occasionally shocking, and perpetually hysterical romp to hell and back, Hand To God’s exploration of the ideas of faith, morality, and human nature will leave you sore with laughter.
40s. Southern accent. Margery is Jason’s mother. She’s still reeling from the death of her husband, who suffered a fatal heart attack after years of overeating. In a way, Margery blames herself — if only she’d been a better wife, if only she’d taken better care of her husband — and that guilt leaves her stressed, desperate, and frazzled. In an attempt to find some grounding and purpose, Margery asked Pastor Greg to allow her to start a club at the church. He permits this, and Margery starts the Christian Puppet Ministry, which is made up of three unenthusiastic members– her son, Jason, the deadpan brainiac Jessica, and the infuriating and flirtatious Timothy. Despite the harried nature and short fuse she’s currently saddled with, Margery is truly warm-hearted, independent, and caring — particularly when it comes to Jason. She also has a deep-rooted sexuality, which she pushes down in order to appear “good” in this hyper-Christian culture. When Timothy’s bad attitude and flirtatious behavior reach a zenith, Margery throws caution to the wind and finds an eager recipient of her rough, self-flagellating sexual impulses. On the other hand, Pastor Greg’s weak-willed come-ons do nothing for Margery. In all of Margery’s efforts to be “good,” she is just pushing herself further over the edge. The actor playing Margery should have great comic timing. Experience in fight choreography is a major plus; this role includes hand-to-hand combat and rough “sex.
17 years old, to be played by an actor 18+. Southern accent. Jason is the inarticulate, mild-mannered, and cripplingly shy son of Margery. Still in grief after the recent death of his father, Jason is struggling to be present and helpful to his mother, even when it makes him uncomfortable to do so. The prime example of this comes when he joins his mother’s Christian Puppet Ministry, whose members consist of his crush, Jessica, and the school bully, Timothy. Jason feels out of place with his peers, with his pastor, with his mother; essentially, with everyone on earth, including himself — until he begins to practice with his hand puppet, whom he has named Tyrone. Jason has a natural ability for puppetry, and after prompting from his mother, learns to perform the song “Jesus Loves Me” and the Abbot & Costello “Who’s on First” routine with Tyrone. Soon, however, Tyrone begins to develop a mind (and personality) of his own. Unlike Jason, Tyrone is loud, foul-mouthed, and utterly without propriety. Jason and Tyrone begin fighting for control — and the aggressive and ruthless Tyrone seems destined to overpower the quiet and deferential Jason. It seems, too, that Tyrone may be possessed by the Devil. Eventually, after Tyrone’s violent and humiliating attacks on Jason’s classmates, mother, pastor, and Jason himself come to a head, Jason takes matters into his own hands (or hand). While he is never entirely comfortable with attention, control, or responsibility, Jason has a deep-rooted sense of right and wrong and the gumption to fight for what matters. The role of Jason requires an actor with an exceptional facility with puppets and language, and with a transformational physicality. Tyrone is a part of Jason, but he is also a completely independent character, and must read that way. The actor playing Jason must also have excellent comic chops.
45 to 50 years old. Southern accent. A small town Presbyterian pastor, Pastor Greg is single, lonely, and has a major crush on one of his congregants, Margery. Pastor Greg is a charismatic leader and a friendly presence, but his flirtations are a bit awkward. He pretends to be strong, but really, Pastor Greg is as sensitive as any of his congregants, and feels put out and hurt when he’s not the center of attention. He’s got the energy of a leading man, but traces of the buffoon cling to him. Pastor Greg tries his best to be “good” and Godly, but he knows that he’s not entirely pure. He’s at his best when he can step up and “take care” of someone or something. The actor playing Pastor Greg should have great comic timing.
17 years old, to be played by an actor 18+. Southern/Texan accent. Jessica is a member of the Christian Puppet Ministry, but only because she’s into Balinese Shadow Puppetry and this is the closest she can get. Jessica is intelligent and quirky, with a dry, deadpan sense of humor. When she’s taunted by her fellow puppeteer Timothy in his typically crude and sexual way, Jessica hits back just as hard — but with wit. Jason, her shy classmate, has a crush on Jessica. She knows, and she treats him with kindness and understanding — which just makes him like her more. A relationship is not out of the realm of possibility. Although she’s an outsider, Jessica is fearless and can hold her own and keep her cool in nearly any situation. The actor playing Jessica should have great comic timing and skill with a hand puppet.
17 years old, to be played by an actor 18+. Southern/Texan accent. Timothy is a high school alpha male with an alcoholic mother and an utterly dysfunctional family. In order to protect himself, Timothy removes all filters for socialization — he’s crude, mean, and always on the edge of a violent outburst. He has blatant behavioral problems, but there’s a genuine tenderness and hopefulness buried deep under his tough exterior. Timothy has a fierce crush on his puppet teacher, Margery, and is not shy about expressing it. His affection for her is a mix of rough, physical lust and true intimate feelings. Eventually Margery and Timothy consummate a lustful, rough, and uninhibited sexual affair. Timothy’s assertiveness, mixed with his vulnerability, make Timothy a powder keg in wait. The actor playing Timothy should have great comic timing. Experience in fight choreography is a major plus; this role includes hand-to-hand combat and rough “sex.”
Memphis…….February 25th & 26th 7:00pm
Inspired by actual events in the underground 1950s dance clubs, Memphis tells the story of a white radio DJ, Huey Calhoun, who adores taboo Black music and eventually falls in love with a beautiful Black singer. The singer, Felicia Farrell, is desperate to find her big break. The unlikely couple rises quickly in the Memphis music scene but trouble arises as they earn the attention of racists.

Red………….April 15th & 16th
John Logan’s taut, visceral two-hander, Red, features artist Mark Rothko at the height of his career. Viewed through the lens of his youthful new assistant, Ken, we witness Rothko at the pinnacle of his creativity, but struggling through the creation of a series of large paintings, commissioned as a series intended to feature in New York’s brand-new Four Seasons Restaurant. As Ken and Rothko paint, they challenge each other to ask big questions about art: what it takes to create it and what its role should be in the world. Set in the 1950s, and based on a series of real events, Red takes a compelling look at the ever-changing relationship between an artist and his creations.
50+. Mark Rothko is a master Abstract Expressionist painter who has already achieved much critical acclaim at this point in his career. The New York Times once described Rothko as “a man of fierce opinions and didactic conversation.” He is mercurial, moody, controlling, and riddled with angst as he attempts to create art of meaning and importance. Rothko is predisposed to bouts of depression, which are fueled by his incessant need to ask deep questions about the meaning and purpose of art and how it reflects the meaning and purpose (or lack thereof) of life. He is rarely an easy man to work with, and treats his apprentice more like a lackey than a partner – but his belief in and passion for art comes through to his apprentice, in spite of anything Rothko does to prevent it. Rothko is opinionated, driven, and extremely set in his ways. Yet, beneath his tough exterior and jaded outlook on life and art, lies the heart and vulnerability of a deeply feeling man of immense emptiness and passionate longing.
Early to Late 20s. Ken is Mark Rothko’s new assistant. An aspiring painter himself, Ken is awestruck to be working alongside this master, but also has new ideas about the next generation of art-making and how it should be different from the last. He is terribly nervous around his rather surly boss, but he eventually finds his quiet way to express his ever-developing, thoughtful opinions to this older master. He is quiet by nature, but eventually finds a voice for himself and a way to express his criticisms of the art and artists who have come before him, and his enthusiasm for the many years of art to come.
