This four-day intensive workshop will focus specifically on modeling the human hand. Each participant will life-cast their own or a fellow classmate’s hand to use as reference. They will build an armature and sculpt an enlarged hand with oil-based clay in the pose of their choice. Each participant will take home a hydrocal hand life-cast to add to their reference library. The class focus will be anatomy of the hand and translating direct observation into the clay. It will include learning modern life-casting techniques and materials with individual attention and hands-on experience for each participant. Teaching methods will include brief lectures and discussions, a guided tour of historic examples within the Brookgreen Collection, as well as armature building and sculpture demonstrations showing a variety of clay modeling techniques. This course is appropriate for beginning or advanced students of sculpture, and each participant will receive instruction based on their specific skill levels.
