SPRING & SUMMER 2019 EXCURSIONS
The Department of Academic & Community Outreach would like to announce our most recent excursions planned for the upcoming semester.
Local Excursions
We will depart from the parking lot on the right side of the Coastal Carolina Science Center (301 Allied Drive, Conway) for trips that are located north or west of Myrtle Beach. For the convenience of those living along the south Strand, we will offer a pickup at the intersection of U.S. 17 Bypass and S.C. 544 for northbound trips. We will depart from the Coastal Carolina Science Center and pick up at the Litchfield Education Center 45 minutes later for destinations to the south of Myrtle Beach. For the convenience of those living along the north Strand, we will offer a pickup at the intersection of U.S. 17 Bypass and S.C. 544 for southbound trips. Details about the trips, including departure, will be emailed seven to 10 days prior to the excursion. No refunds will be given for cancellations made within one week of the date of the trip. We encourage early registration since many of our excursions fill up fast. *Asterisks* indicate a stop for lunch, but unless noted otherwise, meals are not included in the excursion fee.

Horry County Museum and L. W. P. Living History Farm*

First, we will visit the Horry County Museum, located in downtown Conway. The museum features monthly exhibits by local artists in addition to its historical and regional exhibits. We will learn about the wide range of environmental conditions found in Horry County and how its inhabitants, from prehistoric to present, have adapted to these local conditions. The museum features a variety of materials from old tools and photographs to miniatures of industries such as those producing tar and turpentine. Exhibits include farming tools and implements, household items and clothing, items from an old country store, local crafts – both historical and modern, and wildlife specimens and photographs. After having lunch in Conway, we will proceed to the 17-acre L.W. Paul Historic Farm, where we will get a sense of what it was like to live in a rural farming community during the first half of the 20th century. The farm includes a variety of reconstructed buildings authentic to the time period and costumed interpreters who will demonstrate and talk about traditional farm activities such as milking cows, making soap, canning vegetables and growing tobacco. Airlie Gardens, Wilmington*

A volunteer garden guide will accompany us on a walking tour, discussing Arlie’s history, horticulture and ecology. It takes about an hour and a half to take a leisurely stroll through the gardens, walking a total of .9 miles. While the azaleas may have already bloomed by the time of our visit, we will have access to the butterfly house, which opens May 15. We will have lunch in Wilmington either before or after our visit. Activity Level 4.

Coastal Carolina University Campus Tour

Join us for a customized walking tour of the Coastal Carolina University campus along with a talk by Nick DeStefano on the history of this institution. We will end our journey at the Hicks Dining Room where you can help yourself to a wide variety of cuisines and eat all that you want for the discounted cost of $6.50. Activity Level 4.

Taste of Wilmington

Enjoy an afternoon in Wilmington, N.C., sampling food and drink from an eclectic assortment of restaurants, meeting the city’s best chefs and learning about the historic downtown area. Food and drink samples are included in the excursion fee. Activity Level 3.

S.C. Aquarium

The South Carolina Aquarium/Sea Turtle Hospital has expanded and is now able to shed light on the awe-inspiring process of rescue, rehabilitation and release of the sea turtles. Both a hospital and a guest experience, the Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery allows every guest who visits the aquarium to experience the journey home. Be entertained by an intimate look at many of South Carolina’s native animals and plants as your self guided journey through the aquarium takes you from the mountains to the sea. After spending the morning at the aquarium we’ll have a couple of hours downtown Charleston to eat lunch or adventure on your own. Activity Level 5.

Charleston Tea Plantation and Angel Oak

The Charleston Tea Plantation is located on the historic Wadmalaw Island, which is in the heart of the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Charleston Tea Plantation teas are the only brand in the world made exclusively with 100 percent tea grown in America. You will enjoy a lovely trolley ride through the tea fields, stopping at the greenhouse and ending with the tour of the factory and a visit to the plantation gift shop. This excursion will conclude with a trip to the legendary Angel Oak Tree. Lunch on your own at a local restaurant. Activity Level 3.

Archaeology Dig in Little River Neck with Carolyn Dillian

We will travel to a prehistoric campsite occupied by Native American people between 400-800 years ago, located on the Little River Neck, within the Anne Tilghman Boyce Coastal Reserve. Under the guidance of Carolyn Dillian, professor of anthropology and chair of the Department of Anthropology and Geography at CCU, we will participate in all aspects of the excavation and documentation of artifacts. Activity Level: 4.

Strolling the Market/Farmers Market, Charleston

The City Market, established in the 1970s, stretches for four city blocks and offers a wide array of handmade treasures. Nearby in Marion Square is the Charleston Farmers Market, founded in 1989. Come with OLLI@CCU and spend a day in beautiful downtown Charleston where you’ll be free to explore both markets and the quaint shops that line the cobblestone streets of the city. Activity Level 4.

Cypress Gardens, Monks Corner

Join us on a self-guided walking tour of Cypress Gardens, located in Moncks Corner. Cypress Gardens encompasses 175 acres of swamps and gardens offering a walk-through Butterfly House with free-flying butterflies, beautiful plants, birds and much more. Their Swamparium features reptiles, fish and amphibians native to the swamp and nearby waterways. Explore their Heritage Museum, which tells the history of the former rice plantation through interpretive text and displays of slave artifacts. Activity Level 5.

Natural Dyes Workshop, Florence Art Museum

Join us for an all-day natural dye class at the Florence County Art Museum. This hands-on workshop will explore the range of colors made possible from natural dyes. Each students will leave with a useable color sample in a range of fibers and full instructions for dyeing at home. All beginner to intermediate skill levels welcome. Activity Level 2.

Cameron Art Museum and Cape Fear River, Wilmington, N.C.

We will start our day with a guided tour of the Cameron Art Museum, formally known as the St. John’s Museum of Art, established in downtown Wilmington in 1804. Following our tour, we’ll visit historical downtown Wilmington where you’ll have two hours to explore, shop or dine. Our afternoon will end with a scenic 50-minute narrated eco-history cruise down the Cape Fear River. Activity Level 4.

Sweetgrass Basket Weaving Workshop, Florence Art Museum

Join this workshop and experience the art of weaving a Charleston sweetgrass basket. Our instructor, Sarah Edwards-Hammond, is listed on the S.C. Art Commission Roster for Artists and is an active member of the Sweetgrass Basket Association. Activity Level 2.

Health Food Crawl (Whole Foods, Earth Fare and Trader Joe’s)

Join us as we travel to Wilmington to explore healthy grocery store options. Starting with Whole Foods, we’ll discover an American supermarket chain that exclusively sells products free from hydrogenated fats from artificial colors, flavors, preservatives and sweeteners. Next, we’ll take on Earth Fare, an American health and wellness supermarket. We’ll finish our exploration at Trader Joe’s, an American chain of “fresh format” grocery stores based in California. Activity Level 4.

South Carolina Indigo Workshop: Indigofera Suffruticosa, Florence

History, science and art meet in this hands-on exploration of natural indigo pigment. Participants will explore the importance of the indigo plant to South Carolina’s colonial agricultural economy, learn the basic science behind this unique dye plant, and create original works of textile art using indigo dye. Recycle and Renew: Consignment Crawl and Health Foods

Departing from Conway at 9 a.m. and Litchfield at 9:45 a.m., we will learn about the history of thrift and consignment shops as we visit several located between Litchfield and Charleston. After a delicious lunch in Mt. Pleasant, we will stop at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods before returning home. Activity Level 4.

Victorian Tea in Florence, S.C.

Put on your Sunday best and join us for an afternoon Victorian tea at Top Hat Specialty Teas in Florence. Enjoy a delicious cup of tea as you dine on your choice of finger sandwiches, scones with Devonshire cream, lemon curd fruit medley with cheese tea bread, miniature quiche and a dessert tray. Sue Ann Whittick, one of our OLLI instructors who teaches courses about tea tasting and tea parties, will introduce the history and enchantment of tea parties before we start our excursion to Florence. Activity Level 2.

We will transport you to campus, where Amy Hall, graphic designer, film producer and graduate of CCU’s Department of Visual Arts will introduce the regional premiere of her film “Segfault,” followed by a reception. If you want to find parking on your own, the event is free! Activity Level 2.

OLLI members who take 10 or more excursions with us during the spring semester will be rewarded with a day trip of their choice (priced under $100) during the fall semester. It pays to travel with OLLI@CCU!
2019 National and International Excursions offered by OLLI@CCU through Collette and Premier World Discovery
Domestic and international trips offered through Collette or Premier World Discovery require earlier deadlines. Brochures are available at our centers for each of the following trips. Registration forms and payments should be sent directly to the tour company. CCU travel insurance ($2/day) is required for international destinations and will be the only payment made directly to us. Note: We have discovered that the tour companies have very few single accommodations, and more often than not, if you choose that option, they will place you on a waiting list.
